Marc Vanrunxt & Igor Shyshko: (based on a true story) #9

“As a child, I hated it when the weekend movie on Flemish television ended with the message, ‘Based on a true story’,” Marc Vanrunxt, the choreographer of this piece, tells us. “It was always a disappointment and a form of deception. I preferred made-up stories at that time. Many years later, I wanted to reverse this feeling by using the ‘title’ (based on a true story) for a new format and presentation model for short dance creations.”

This brings us to (based on a true story) #9, a performance made of several fragments constructed through Vanrunxt’s working sessions with a series of dancers over time. The title refers to actual true stories—authentic encounters with these dancers, each encounter different from the other, evolving, taking place in different situations, locations, and timeframes.

For the Spider Festival performance, Marc Vanrunxt joins forces with Igor Shyshko to create a so-called super solo, combining materials from their recent collaborations with fragments from Igor Shyshko’s piece, Malus.
